Nobody likes going to the dentist. But, what is going to the dentist also meant taking a vacation to Costa Rica?
Dental tourism is picking up speed in Costa Rica, a small Central American country that has already become a popular medical destination for Americans and Canadians seeking top medical care at a more affordable price than they can find back home. Now, dental tourism is becoming the next big thing as more and more Americans and Canadians pack their bags and turn their trip to the dentist into a tropical getaway.
Professional dentistry standards in Costa Rica are very similar to those found through the United States and Canada and many dentists at the Flikier Institute of Dental Rehabilitation in San Jose, Costa Rica has been trained in the United States and are members in good standing with the American Dental Association. While other countries, such as Cuba also see medical and dental tourists, standards through Costa Rica tend be higher and more on par with medical and dental standards in the U.S. and Canada and since getting to and from Costa Rica is so easy and from many locations, quite affordable, dental tourism is on the rise.
Major dental restoration procedures can easily cost 30 percent less in Costa Rica than in the U.S. or Canada and in some cases the cost can be half the price quoted to patients in their home countries. International Living, an online magazine serving retirees aboard, published an article about a woman who needed major dental work, estimated to cost her between $35,000 and $40,000 in Denver, Colorado, her hometown. Rather than accept the high cost, she looked for other options and was able to get all procedures done in Costa Rica, over the course of two trips. The total cost for her dental work, her airfare, her accommodations and her min-vacations while in Costa Rica was only $14,000, less than half the original quote. With more and more stories circulating about alternative options for dental and medical care, it’s no wonder more patients are backing their bags and looking outside the U.S. and Canada for healthcare options.
It’s not just the lower cost of dental care with same high standards that is appealing when it comes to dental tourism. The excuse to take a vacation while taking care of your teeth is leading more and more Americans and Canadians to look into dental tourism. A trip to Costa Rica can be quick, easy, and affordable so after the dental work is done, there is time to enjoy all that Costa Rica has to offer, from the Cloud Forests of Monteverde to the beautiful beaches of both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. And while the best dental clinics are all found in San Jose, the country is small enough that taking a side trip outside of the city is an easy and viable option for anyone who visits the country.
