Just 10 minutes walking distance from Punta Playa Vistas lays a hidden treasure that is worth its weight in gold, Pirates Beach (Bahia de los Piratas). It is my favorite beach in all of Costa Rica for many reasons. This beach is picturesque with its white sands, blue waters and amazing views of the Catalina Islands. It is enjoyable with its tide pools for people of all ages to explore, left break for surfers to ride and seashells for tourists to collect. If you need an ice cold cerveza or a refreshing batido (a drink mixed with your choice of fruit and water or milk), set back from the beach is the Bahia de los Piratas Restaurant and Hotel. This beach makes for a great day trip whether you are down the road at Punta Playa Vistas or staying at real estate in Tamarindo.
Pirates Beach is nestled amongst nature. The only noises you will here are the waves crashing, the monkeys howling and the resident parrots, Lola and Lolo, speaking to you in Spanish. Pelicans peruse the shoreline for their next meal and hermit crabs galore reside in the rocky tide pools. The turtles dig their nests and bury their eggs along this beach from September to November. It is truly a beach enjoyed by all.
The only time you would find this beach crowded is during Easter and Christmas week. Otherwise, you are sunbathing at your private beach with just a handful of locals. It is completely opposite of the packed beaches neighboring Tamarindo real estate.
Pirates Beach means so much to me on a personal level. Before Christian and I made the move to Costa Rica we visited this beach. Christian had been here before, but it was my first time. I was amazed at its beauty and was thrilled at its proximity to Punta Playa Vistas. We decided to take a kayak ride around Pirate Rock (an island head close to shore that is rumored to have pirate’s treasure hidden inside. At low tide you can walk out to the island and take your stab at discovering the buried treasure.). As we were kayaking we saw a rainbow and I knew we were making the right decision in developing Punta Playa Vistas and moving to a foreign country. One year later, Christian proposed to me on this very same beach with a beautiful sunset in the background. A year after that in 2008, we had our gorgeous rehearsal dinner on our favorite beach. Now five years later we enjoy bringing our daughter and dog down here to watch sunset and discover sea creatures in the tide pools.
If you are a beach goer there is no doubt in my mind that you will fall in love with Bahia de los Piratas (Pirates Beach) as much as I have.
